Joy Is An Inside Job
20 March 2022|Health, Nutrition, Recipes, Sustainability
We suggest you aim for the eudaimonic type (the ‘meaning, growth, acceptance’ type), rather than the hedonistic type, which comes and goes.
Bet you struggle to watch this trailer without smiling – these two were just full of joy.
Neuroscience and psychology are uncovering answers about how to find joy. Spoiler: they look strikingly similar to what ancient wisdom has always been pointing us to…
Here are four easy ACTS OF JOY to start you off with, all scientifically proven:
- Kindness (it will bring YOU joy)
- Gratitude (list what you’re grateful for)
- Reframing (look for that silver lining)
- Connection (we were born for this!)
We added the Mission Joy resource to our site this week
Glucose – That’s only for diabetics to think about isn’t it? No, as Jessie Inchauspé well knows. Looks as well as brains, Jessie was featured on the front page of the UK’s Daily Mail last week, next to the headline: The Glucose Revolution ‘Lose weight, boost your energy and even perk up your love life – just by changing how you eat.’ (We would argue that ‘what’ you eat often needs to change to achieve all those things too.)
The premise is to minimise the glucose spikes that cause: cravings, low energy, unsettled sleep, aging, poor fertility and sex hormones, tired skin, wrinkles, heart damage, cognitive decline, menopause symptoms, less migraines, increased cancer risk, poorer mental health, poorer gut health, lessen PCOS symptoms, contribute to gestational diabetes type 1 diabetes, and increase risk of type 2 diabetes.
But how? She’ll show you and shares the science behind these ‘hacks’:
- Eat foods in the right order
- Add a plate of vegetables to all your meals
- Have a savoury breakfast
- Only eat fruit whole
- Have a savoury snack, if you want one
- Choose dessert over a sweet snack
- Include vinegar in your diet
- Move after your meals
- Avoid naked carbs (that’s gotten your interest…)
Jessie’s first book hits the stores on the 25 March, it’s endorsed by many familiar names on our site, we’re looking forward to reading a copy.
Pretty, smart ladies week continues with Dr Lara Briden. Dr Briden is a naturopathic doctor and author of the books Period Repair Manual (focusing on period issues) and Hormone Repair Manual (focusing on peri-menopause and menopause) — excellent guides to treating the issues with nutrition, supplements, and bio-identical hormones.
Do you have diabetes or pre-diabetes and want to improve your health? The next 8 week series from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine begins on 29 March, with recordings and recipes available on demand too. It’s a nutrition-based approach, you will learn how plant-based foods can help you improve blood sugar, lose weight, control blood pressure, alongside others with the same goals.
I shared this on Sunday lunchtime – may have inadvertently spoiled a few roast lunches I guess…
It’s a well researched article and makes an excellent case for adopting a plant-based diet. Written by Dr Shireen Kassam, founder of Plant-Based Health Professionals UK and author of the recently released Eating Plant Based book.
Out out! No, we’ve not been adopted into a bizarre cult – but we did get to celebrate our adopted homeland’s Grand Slam rugby win on Saturday night.
A pick-me-up for our mental health to be out socialising after such a long time.
As British and French passport holders we’d already won the tournament – but the JOY in that village hall on Saturday would have had The Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu (God rest his soul) smiling.
It’s the kids in the spotlight this week: Meet Anu, Ava, Ella, Maxwell, Mia and little Nora. They’ve their own shows featured on the So Many Cooks site under ‘Kids’. Great to see the next generation enjoying making healthy food.
