Blue Monday?

Blue Monday?

16 January 2023|Health, Nutrition, Recipes, Sustainability, Testimonials

Red roses, green juice and sliced avocado on brown bread

Apparently the third Monday in January is supposed to be ‘blue.’  Not claiming that one: It may be windy and raining outside, I may not be where I’d planned to be today (trip deferred), but no, I’m not accepting that.

It is a choice.  We can choose to be happy, even in some pretty crummy circumstances.

So today I chose a healthy breakfast: Juice – apple, lemon, turmeric, ginger, celery, cucumber, filtered water and sliced avocado with black pepper and olive oil on toast.

I choose health.

Speaking of health, we added a new section to the site last week: Disorders and Addictions.

We’ll add more resources, for now, here’s my testimonial about how I quit alcohol following a breast cancer diagnosis – and the results.

Three years on I do partake in the odd glass of wine, the celebratory gin and tonic – a new balance in my new healthy life.

Daily encouragement for January 12 2023
Love this encouragement to follow your passion – DO IT ANYWAY

‘The best thing we can do is manage the beautiful things we have and animals fit right into that category’ Clint Eastwood.

This new film is both beautiful and heart-breaking.

As a ranger says: ‘You protect the system, you are protecting your own health.’

Busy adding this to our sustainability section…

Guava powder, organic, packaged to be easily transported.

I was able to pick these beauties straight from the tree in Bolivia last summer, they’re powerhouses:

  • May help improve blood sugar control in people with diabetes or those at risk.
  • Guava fruit or leaf extract may have a positive effect on heart health by lowering blood pressure, decreasing bad cholesterol, and increasing good cholesterol.
  • Taking guava leaf extract daily may help decrease symptoms of painful menstruation, including cramps.
  • Consuming guavas or guava leaf extract may prevent or reduce diarrhoea and constipation.
  • Guavas are full of fibre and low in calories, meaning that they may help you feel full and aid weight loss.
  • The high levels of antioxidants in guava may help prevent the development and growth of cancer cells.
  • Guavas are one of the richest food sources of vitamin C. Maintaining adequate levels of this vitamin is important for protecting against illness and infections.
  • The antioxidants and vitamins in guavas can help slow down the ageing of your skin, while guava leaf extract may help treat acne.  Healthline

Alzheimer’s can be prevented, claims this eminent doctor:

Herby Butter Bean Dip and red peppers

Was feeling a bit ‘hummus-ed out’ last week, it took 5 mins to whizz up this Herby Butter Bean Dip from Deliciously Ella‘s new book: How to Go Plant-Based (p121) for a bit of a change.

Took it along to my local council meeting… Far to random for my fellow councillors, but after trying they decided they liked it – spread on fresh baguette (of course).

The sliced red peppers were a step too far – they came home and became The Pesky Vegan’s Red Pepper and Lentil Soup for Bible study the following night.

Plant-based is nothing if not adaptable!

Cooks book cover with Dr Rupy Aujla

Cooks is released this week (19 January in the UK).  Love Dr Rupy’s flavour combos, you can get a taste (ha!) on his website here.

The Doctor's Kitchen Eat to beat Illness book cover with Dr Rupy Aujla

You can pick yourself up a bargain this month too.  This 2019 offering is a really educative read:

‘Simple changes to what you eat can protect and amplify your defence against ill health.  I firmly believe the key to a happy, healthy and long life starts in the kitchen – for me it’s plates over pills every time.’

Refreshing from an NHS doc – we agree.

Denise Stevenson founded the health and wellness charity Double-zero.org in 2021 after healing from stage 3 breast cancer at (5-zero) and realising there was no one source to access the wealth of resources that had guided her back to health without the mastectomy her oncologist said was a certainty. Denise is a church founder and president, author and local councillor. She's English-born and has French nationality after living there with her husband and 3 girls for the past 20 years.
