That’s the number of new cancer cases predicted by the American Cancer Society in 2022

(excluding basal cell and squamous cell skin cancers and in situ carcinomas except urinary bladder).  So says the 80 page report just released.  Approximately 609,360 deaths from cancer are expected in the US in 2022 (about 1,670 deaths per day). Cancer is the second most common cause of death in the US, exceeded only by heart disease.

‘Almost 1 in 5 cancers is caused by excess body weight, alcohol consumption, poor diet, and physical inactivity. Many Americans encounter substantial barriers to consuming a healthy diet and engaging in regular physical activity. To facilitate healthier lifestyles and curtail the future cancer burden, policy and environmental interventions across national, state, and local levels are needed. Efforts should include creative new strategies that are culturally appropriate and equitable to increase access to affordable, nutritious foods (e.g., healthy checkout aisles) and safe, enjoyable opportunities for physical activity (e.g., quality school physical education programs)’

The American Cancer Society’s mission is to save lives, celebrate lives, and lead the fight for a world without cancer.  Note:  NO mention of prevention.

President Nixen’s 1971 declaration of ‘War on Cancer’ seems further away than ever.  Perhaps we could try loving and nurturing our bodies instead?

Té Tonics boxes

A little tipple (!) whilst we enjoyed (?) the World Cup on Saturday evening.  Our youngest bought these Té Tonics as a birthday gift a few months ago.  It was time.  NOT the match we were hoping for (although it was definitely gripping).  But these little beauties did not disappoint: ‘100% natural ingredients. No additives, preservatives or artificial colouring added. GMO free.  Both the cases, the cardboard cubes and the PS cubes are 100% recyclable.’  Red Passion was the order of the day on Saturday: apple, red berries, petals and selected flowers.  Now, which one for the next match?

Josh Becker’s site Becoming Minimalist is a great reminder that most of us absolutely do not need more ‘stuff’ this Christmas.  Whilst we’re not about to lecture anyone this Christmastime, we are being mindful about not buying more ‘stuff’ for the sake of it…

Denise is a church founder and president, author and local councillor. She's English-born and has French nationality after living there with her husband and 3 girls for the past 20 years.
