Sleep. Exercise. Diet.

Sleep. Exercise. Diet.

Book cover of Energize by Simon Ong

‘Stop treating your health as a side hustle’

Sleep, exercise and diet are what Simon considers the cornerstone habits of good health.  And he found that it was only AFTER focusing on these three areas that he could begin to transform his own life.

Thinking our site could do with a ‘motivational’ section as part of the Healthy Mind resource.  This book would be a great addition.

At the beginning of the book Simon shares a quote from an Australian lady who is new to us, but absolutely speaks our language: Bronnie Ware.

Here’s the quote:

‘Health brings a freedom very few realise, until they no longer have it.’

We searched out her site, downloaded samples of her books and spent a happy hour watching her vlog.

We can all learn from Bronnie’s wisdom about regret-free living:

Sourdough loaf

Sourdough – why the hype? It goes back to basics – is the easy answer.  The infamous ‘starter’ is flour and water, fermented.  That’s it.  Here’s a great article from Dr Axe explaining how it’s done. Here’s why it’s good for us:

  • Less gluten
  • Lower glycemic index
  • Source of fibre, nutrients and protein

Flourish book cover by Martin EP Seligman

Flourish is part of the recommended reading for The Science of Well-Being course from Yale University that I completed during lockdown in 2020.  It’s a bargain this month.

1000’s of online courses are available via Course Central, the direct link to sign up for The Science of Well-Being, Yale’s most popular online course ever, is on our site.

Black Hennes and Mauritz t-shirt

Voila.  A 30+ year old H&M top (before it was even known as H&M, Hennes and Mauritz it was called ‘in the day’).

Who said inexpensive clothing has to be ‘fast fashion’?

This one’s as good as new, has been worn by 4 members of my family, hasn’t faded, or frayed.

Sustainable fashion.

Someone about to put contact lenses into their eye.

‘Testing of 18 popular kinds of contact lenses found extremely high levels of organic fluorine, a marker of ‘forever chemicals’ states a scary article in The Guardian UK earlier this month.

The lenses with the highest amounts were Alcon Air Optix (No Hydraglide) for Astigmatism, Alcon Air Optix Colors with Smartshield Technology and Alcon Total30 Contact Lenses for Daily Wear.

The lowest levels included Acuvue Oasys with Hydraclear Plus with UV Blocking and Alcon Dailies Total One-Day Water Gradient for Astigmatism.

Is anything safe?  Our eye health resource can be found here.

Baked avocado on vegetable risotto

Restaurants are a-changing here in SW France:

We celebrated the last day with our youngest daughter before we all headed off to the UK, with a delicious lunch in a local restaurant.

Fish was the main course, mine was replaced with baked avocado.  A first for me, but not the last.

Delicious.

‘Helpful, actionable, authoritative health information’ is the mantra of this website that was added to our resource this month.

It’s a wealth of information on 100’s of health issues and is now dotted around our site in the relevant health condition sections.

Denise is a church founder and president, author and local councillor. She's English-born and has French nationality after living there with her husband and 3 girls for the past 20 years.
