Formaldehyde And Chips

Formaldehyde and Chips anyone?

1 August 2022|Health, Nutrition, Recipes, Research papers, Sustainability

Formaldehyde makes me think of Damien Hirst and his preserved dead animals in the Tate Modern Gallery in London many years ago.

Formaldehyde ‘may cause cancer, is suspected of causing genetic defects, toxic if swallowed, may cause respiratory irritation, causes damages to organs.  Do not breathe.’  So why on earth is it being used in Scotland to ‘treat the diseases and lice problems, which are both rampant across the fish farms?’

More than 50 tons of the stuff are being sprayed into farmed salmon fish cages across Scotland (Freedom of Information Data from the Scottish Environment Protection Agency) and that’s just the tip of our planet’s (melting) iceberg…

Ecological collapse.  It’s happening.  We are polluting our planet – and ourselves.

Speaking of Dr Shireen Kassam…

This Q&A style guide is on offer for the  month of August on Kindle UK for £2,89.

It’s an excellent resource with scientific answers to nutrition questions.

Do we really NEED meat, dairy and eggs?  These sisters will clearly show you why we do not.

Breast mates natural deodorant

A NZ friend sent me pics of some of the natural skin care products she’s been making at home on her farm.  She said: ‘Perhaps you are like me and want to avoid putting a truckload of toxic chemicals on your body, particularly close to the lymph nodes and right next to the breasts!!!  Made with only organic and natural ingredients including essential oils known to inhibit the growth of cancer cells  And keeps you smelling fresh all day.’

All the best Deb – [email protected]

Many commercial deodorants have aluminium listed as an ingredient.  This research featured on our site shows clearly the impact it has.

Pan of tomatoes, salt and pepper holders, fresh basil and olive oil

I could almost make this with my eyes closed…

We’ve had an abundance of cheap, organic tomatoes available at our local organic shop (as little as 1,69 euros a kilo!) and I’ve been practicing my bruschetta skills on a regular basis.

The kids love them and it’s an easy one to keep in the fridge for days.

Delicious on toasted sourdough, as a pasta sauce, added to any number of vegetable dishes, or, as is often the case, simply spooned out of the bowl…

As the pic shows; pop the tomatoes in boiling water for a couple of minutes to loosen their skins.  Take off the skins and empty the seeds.  Chop into pieces, add fresh basil, sea-salt, freshly ground pepper and olive oil.

Sieving tomatoes

Why have I only just realised that I can sieve the remnants of the tomatoes and have a delicious/nutritious glass of tomato juice afterwards instead of throwing them away????

And no, I didn’t add vodka…

Two heads of roasted garlic

Tried this for the first time this week too: take the tops off a couple of heads of garlic, douse in olive oil and pop in the oven for half an hour or so, until your kitchen smells amazing and they’re soft.

Roasted garlic heads

Then simply squeeze the cloves out of their cases.  You now have a supply of cooked garlic for the next few days to add to whatever you’re cooking.

Pan frying yellow courgettes

These are a simple, seasonal treat too: Courgettes from our village pan-fried in coconut oil, with local thyme-infused sea-salt and some black pepper.

These are good in the fridge for a few days too and I’ve added them to pasta dishes, ratatouille and just eaten cold straight from the fridge.

When it’s too hot to go out – our cool kitchen’s a great place to be…

This message was from a girlfriend who stayed a couple of weeks ago.  She drinks LOADS of tap water, well she did.

We talked about what was added to it while she stayed with us (a lot…) and she’s picked herself up a Brita carafe-style water filter to sit in her fridge door.

Glad to be of service Gina.

This beaut was a thank you gift from the mum of our daughter’s boyfriend at the end of last summer.  I thought I’d killed it over the winter, but no!  It’s back in all it’s stunning glory.  I sat and enjoyed a cup of hibiscus tea, in front of my hibiscus last night.  And smiled.

Clothing pics from Vinted

Finally got around to joining the world of Vinted at the weekend.  I’m a great one for passing on used clothing/stuff and will continue to do so, but after being encouraged by my daughter, I got busy on the app and had a lovely time selling some well-loved clothing.  All packaged (re-used parcel packaging of course), wrapped in tissue paper and sent off (not so eco-friendly, but they do use pick-up and drop-off points for vast amounts of parcels).

Fun, made the buyers smile with some short messages, I’m happy with 30+ euros that I wouldn’t have had and the clothes get a second life.

Win/win.
