Dame Olivia – You’re The One That We All Wanted!

16 August 2022|Health, Nutrition, Recipes, Sustainability, Testimonials

It is rare not to hear a bad word said about someone – but I haven’t found one yet about Dame Olivia Newton-John.

Dame Olivia Newton-John

30 years ago Dame Olivia Newton-John was diagnosed with breast cancer – the same weekend that her father died of the disease.  She made a full recovery: ‘I made a decision that I was going to be alright and after that I had a deep-down belief that I would be.’ For over 20 years she was, but in 2013 and 2017 her cancer returned.  She died last week, 30 years after her original diagnosis.

She said of her experience of cancer: ‘My whole cancer journey was so I could help people.  I don’t regret it because I see the experience of going through it and coming out of it as a gift.’  Too good to be true?  It appears not.  She built the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness centre in Melbourne – her legacy.

Mike Fremont talks to Rich Roll: 100 years and counting.  What’s his secret?  Here’s another long-term cancer thriver.  (Spoiler, a whole-food plant-based diet features heavily):

Sea moss on rocks in the sea

If it’s good enough for Kim and Kourtney Kardashian…

Irish sea moss is being hailed as a ‘superfood‘ so says an article in last weekend’s Sunday Times.  Seaweed. It grows in rock pools and inlets along the west coast of Ireland, facing the Atlantic, including County Clare and Galway. It is rich in vitamins and minerals, including calcium and iodine, and is said to help with everything from gut health to reducing inflammation.  Holland & Barrett, said: “More research is needed into the claimed health benefits of sea moss in humans, but early effects are promising on studies into similar seaweed and algae.”

'Think of the coastline, go plant-based'. So says a reusable grocery bag our daughter came home with this week. Made of jute, it's completely recyclable. Progress.

We may enjoy laughing at Dory, the pretty blue fish with short-term memory loss, but do we laugh when we think of the trillions of fish killed by humans each year? And year on year we killing more and more. Do they suffer though?  Is a question oft asked.  Long-lining, trawling, gill-netting, shows that yes, they do.  I’d never heard of Ryuji Chua, or peacebyvegan – or bycatch a week ago.  Now I have.  And I’ve watched his film.  700m long trawling nets are in our oceans, processing their massive catches onboard, then freezing them, also on board.
4k tonnes of fish – and that’s just one trip.  We’re emptying our oceans.

It won’t end well.

Ingredients for vegan mushroom pate

The Pesky Vegan is fast becoming a website fave!  Even our daughter’s meat-loving French friends adored their mushroom paté.  Here’s a pic from their website.  I substituted the cashew cream for a store-bought soy cream for speed.

Delicious.

We’re on our third batch currently.

3 bowls: mashed banana, added oats, mixed together

A little scrolling of their site and I saw two ingredient cookies.  What?  2 ingredients. Yep.  That’s it for their Banana Oat Cookies:

2 mashed bananas

1 cup of oats

Mix together.  Cook for 12-15 mins at 180c.

And eat.

We have.  We’ve added chia seeds, cranberries, dark chocolate chips and chopped up dates so far.

Who said healthy food is hard?

Our garden’s struggling in the heat this summer: few figs this year and the ones we do have are tiny and taste part-dried, as they are!  Our roses are surviving, as is the beautiful oleander.  Juice, however, is always present…

Roses and oleander in a vase. A bowl of figs and a glass of green juice

The Gathering. An olive branch.
Returns! Thursday 1 September. 6pm UK time/7pm CET. Zoom code to follow.

Dawn and Maisie Lossau

This AWESOME young lady left us yesterday.  Age 17.

We featured her story and that of Finbar’s Force, ‘a charity that aims to support families and children affected by childhood cancer and support the fight against childhood brain tumours’ back in April.

God bless you dear Maisie – we spent yesterday quietly reflecting on your AWESOME life and the AWESOME legacy you leave that will help and support so many.

Denise Stevenson founded the health and wellness charity Double-zero.org in 2021 after healing from stage 3 breast cancer at (5-zero) and realising there was no one source to access the wealth of resources that had guided her back to health without the mastectomy her oncologist said was a certainty. Denise is a church founder and president, author and local councillor. She's English-born and has French nationality after living there with her husband and 3 girls for the past 20 years.
