No relation to the Phil Collin’s hit, but according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) it is the single largest environmental threat to human health, and in the UK it is believed to contribute to thousands of premature deaths every year. So what exactly is ‘it’? It’s a type of pollution known as PM2.5, airborne particles with a diameter less than 2.5 micro-metres (about a twentieth of the breadth of a human hair.)
The link between air pollution and dementia risk is a growing area of research. Studies have also suggested a possible detrimental effect on cognition. Students sitting exams have been found to perform worse when PM2.5 levels are higher. Scary stuff – let’s hope The Environmental Bill is executed and respected later in 2022.

December 2017 and I was in the throes of chemotherapy for Stage 3 breast cancer. It wasn’t pretty: No hair, 44kg and in a dark place.

Not one of Ella’s, but this is the most consistent, delicious humous I’ve made so far:
- 1 x 400g tin of chickpeas
- 1 x clove garlic – crushed
- 1 x tbsp tahini
- 2 x tbsp lemon juice
- 3 tbsp x extra virgin olive oil
- salt & pepper
- 1/2 tsp cumin
- pinch smoked paprika
I drain the chickpeas and pop them and all the other ingredients into my NutriBullet blender. Scoop into a serving bowl, drizzle with a little olive oil and a couple of shakes of paprika and that is it.
