Don’t Prioritise Your Looks

Poems about life, love, loss and womanity
(Yes, she made that last word up). This woman is Donna Ashworth and she joined our site this week. Refreshing to see this amazing wordsmith touch so many with her work. We’ve watched her soar over recent years: She’s become a Sunday Times bestselling author, has 1000’s follow her work on social media – with good reason – she’s catching a moment, exquisitely. Long may it – and she, last.
Don’t prioritise your looks my friend,
they won’t last the journey.
Your sense of humour though, will only get better.
Your intuition will grow and expand like a majestic cloak of wisdom.
Your ability to choose your battles, will be fine-tuned to perfection.
Your capacity for stillness, for living in the moment, will blossom.
And your desire to live each and every moment will transcend all other wants.
Your instinct for knowing what (and who) is worth your time, will grow and flourish like ivy on a castle wall.
Don’t prioritise your looks my friend, they will change forevermore,
that pursuit is one of much sadness and disappointment.
Prioritise the uniqueness that makes you you, and the invisible magnet that draws in other like-minded souls to dance in your orbit.
These are the things which will only get better.

As Donna writes; beauty is only skin deep, but, we do value our personal hygiene products.
The Yuka app has been shopping again this week, as we try and decipher what the labels actually mean.
Dove markets itself as ‘we want to give you products you can trust for your skin and hair’.
Though the jury’s out on these ingredients: BHT, aluminium chlorohydrate. Neither of which are banned, but no, this one didn’t get purchased.
Benzene however…
From Wikipedia; ‘Benzene is a natural constituent of crude oil and is one of the elementary petrochemicals. Due to the cyclic continuous pi bonds between the carbon atoms, benzene is classed as an aromatic hydrocarbon. Benzene is a colourless and highly flammable liquid with a sweet smell, and is partially responsible for the aroma of gasoline. It is used primarily as a precursor to the manufacture of chemicals with more complex structure, such as ethylbenzene and cumene, of which billions of kilograms are produced annually. Although a major industrial chemical, benzene finds limited use in consumer items because of its toxicity.’
Just to be clear; ‘A carcinogen is an agent with the capacity to cause cancer in humans’ says the National Human Genome Research Institute.
Dr Jensen shared the above recall on social media this week. We’re impressed with her work, which you can now find on the Women’s Health section of the site.
‘Pancreatic cancer can be a frightening diagnosis. Compared to most other cancers, survival rates are much lower and death often occurs at a more rapid pace.’ Mayo Clinic, US.
This 52 year old Romanian doctor who had stage 4 pancreatic cancer shares his uplifting experience at Chemothermia, a treatment centre in Istanbul.
‘They gave me hope’ he says. And that, as we shared on our social media yesterday is what we need more than anything (Dr Kelly A Turner, Radical Remission).
One of our Contributor’s brother-in-law received treatment at the same clinic. He sadly left us one year ago, but outlived his UK prognosis by several months. Here’s her testimony, with their permission:
‘During lockdown Russ had no treatment in the UK. They refused to scan him when he had more pain in his hips. He then looked elsewhere for scans, and other treatments and this place in Istanbul (Chemothermia.com) came up. His first scan with them showed the cancer had travelled extensively. His oncologist in the UK said he needs to prepare his family and put his ‘house in order’.
He’s on chemo but it’s a different one to the UK – not available there. It’s followed by heating the body up to 45 degrees (body wrapped up in this heavy blanket). Russ said its far more unbearable than the chemo. Then huge doses of vitamin E – a whole different way of eating – NO sugar, limited carbs. Plus huge doses of insulin (think that’s it?) He can’t praise it enough because of the way he’s treated – with hope and support.
Now after just after three months of on/off treatment (one week on, one off, £7000 per week) it’s gone from hips, lungs, spine and various lymph nodes. Just his liver that the UK operated on three times. We know he’s not out of the woods however he’s determined to live. When a doctor believes in the best of you – it’s half the battle. xx
Self-care time. A bit of cocooning. Selfish? Absolutely not. So much research shows that if we don’t take care of ourselves, we cannot take care of others. An Epsom salt bath (great for getting magnesium into our bodies, 20 minute minimum (shame…), body scrub to exfoliate (and make the skin feel amazing), candlelight, in the middle of a Sunday afternoon. Followed by a pedicure. Bliss.

Reduce, re-use and recycle – makes sense Dame Ellen.

Scientists in Norfolk, UK have shown how broccoli can help reduce the risk and progression of prostate cancer.
Tracey Livingstone, who led the trial, said: “There is a wealth of evidence suggesting that dietary compounds found in cruciferous and alliaceous vegetables reduce the risk, or progression of prostate cancer.
This trial showed results in 4 WEEKS.
Organic chickpeas, bought dried, soaked in filtered water overnight, popped in a slow cooker, covered with fresh filtered water for a few hours became this…
Deliciously Ella’s tofu and chickpea korma curry
Even the meat-eating fan who leads our Wednesday evening Bible Study enjoyed it. So much so that the rest was left with he and his wife for lunch the next day.
Win!
Plastic bottles on our feet? Apparently. Old, new slippers, made in the Ukraine. Innovation overload there. They’re really warm and comfy too. Bring on the Autumn/Fall in the Northern hemisphere.
