‘Apeeling?’

‘Apeeling?’

26 April 2023|Health, Nutrition, Recipes, Research papers, Sustainability

Lots of talk about the Apeel food coating which seems to have hit the UK stores and has been in US ones for a while now.  What is it? Is it safe?

Great website, re-assuring and very slick.  Who wouldn’t endorse less food waste?

Ingredient details for Apeel

Many do have questions on the health and safety of the product though.  Here’s an article from the well-renowned Food Navigator on E471.  Jacqueline, a 20 year registered nurse advises caution in an article on her website here.

Check the labelling folks and make an informed choice.

UICT Oncopole's cable car

This pic was taken in the sunshine at the Oncopole Cancer Research Centre in Toulouse France, not an alpine ski resort.

This new cablecar link runs between the cancer hospital and one of the city’s universities.

Guess cancer’s not going anywhere anytime soon with that kind of investment.

Deborah Meaden and Paul Hollywood

Another first.

Congratulations Deborah, delighted to see dairy-free baking in the mainstream.  There are so many dairy substitutes available now, that you can make really great cakes with, as was proven when she won this year’s competition.

Coconut and vanilla cupcakes

Hardly up to Bake Off’s standards, but these coconut and vanilla cupcakes from Deliciously Ella’s latest book were a hit with the vegans and non-vegans who tried them.

UV nail dryer with several bottle of nail polish and a set of red painted fingernails

We highlighted research showing dangers linked to UV nail dryers in our blog of 31 Jan.  This week the British Association of Dermatologists issued a warning over dangers associated with the gel nails themselves.

‘No smoke without fire’ as the old saying goes.

Hugodecrypte's Instagram feed

This young man asks a daily question on his Instagram feed (2.5M followers).  Would you like to live to 100?  Was one of last week’s.

We were quite shocked to see that 58% of the almost 1500 respondents said no.

A couple of the responses shown say ‘Yes, if I was healthy‘.  The lower one says ‘No, not especially, I would like to live long enough to see grandchildren and to be in good health until the age of 80-85’.

Fascinating.

Anticipating a healthy 100 years here at DZ!

Two ladies and three men modelling clothes

‘Fast and cheap or slow and ethical.’

Interesting article in last week’s The Times in the UK about how fashion is broken.  It suggests that yes, there is definitely a boom in second-hand clothing and vintage stores, but that fast fashion is being fuelled by influencers showing their followers their fashion hauls and the ease with which people can now shop instantly.

Apparently the Chinese business Shein’s average item price is £7.90.

Unsustainability.

Microgreens

The Great Food Company featured an article on their blog about microgreens this month.

‘Micro Greens are the young, tender seedlings of vegetables and herbs. Packed with vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and antioxidants, studies have shown that they can be up to 40x more nutritious than their mature counterparts.’

We’ve grown broccoli sprouts on our windowsills for years.  Much research on their antioxidant density to help kill cancerous cells abounds.

Denise Stevenson founded the health and wellness charity Double-zero.org in 2021 after healing from stage 3 breast cancer at (5-zero) and realising there was no one source to access the wealth of resources that had guided her back to health without the mastectomy her oncologist said was a certainty. Denise is a church founder and president, author and local councillor. She's English-born and has French nationality after living there with her husband and 3 girls for the past 20 years.
