Mistletoe And Wine

Mistletoe and Wine

Man in ploughed field holding a bunch of mistletoe

Sir Cliff Richard has been singing about them every  Christmastime for years, but what if we celebrated them both all year?

The health benefits of the resveratrol found in red wine are known by many – the health benefits of mistletoe?  Not so much.

I was advised by a retired NHS nurse to look into mistletoe therapy when I was diagnosed with breast cancer.  One of the lady’s friends had been successfully treated at a clinic in Germany.

The science showing mistletoe’s healing properties is there.  Dr Nasha Winters was kind enough to send me over a transcript of her new book: ‘Mistletoe therapy has long been considered a viable treatment for cancer by the European medical community and is beginning to gain recognition in North America, as well. The mistletoe plant possesses many remarkable properties. As a therapy, it represents a rediscovery of ancient wisdom and shows us how the science of modern medicine might expand its reach and reconnect with a more human-centered medicine.’

It’s been read and added to our burgeoning cancer book resource section, where it joins Dr Nasha’s successful ‘Metabolic Approach to Cancer’ guide.

It seems my friend knew exactly what she was talking about…

An oldie, but goodie.  Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead was released over 10 years ago.  It follows Joe Cross as he travels across America discussing food and health. In the film we follow him for 60 days as he commits to  drinking only fruit and vegetable juice in a bid to reclaim his health.  Spoiler: He does, of course (what kind of a film would it be if he didn’t?)  10 years later he’s still inspiring, you’ll find all his work (including part 2 and a film about children’s health in the States) here – all three are free to watch.

Barcode of No5 Chanel perfume

Thank you Fiona, I’ve had a fascinating time with this free app this week.  As she says: ‘For anyone looking to make healthier swaps in the products they consume, give the Yuka app a go. It’s free and you just scan a barcode and it will give you information about what to avoid and suggest some healthier swaps. Very clever, it also works for cosmetic products like shampoo and body lotions, which is useful considering women absorb up to 300 different chemicals a day due to the myriad of beauty products we use.’

Thumbs up from hubby too – I’m betting the Lidl perfume it suggested as a swap for the Chanel No5 I’ve just finished will be kinder on the pocket as well as my skin…

LOVE the fact that this app is independent; no advertising, no funding from brands, no affiliate links – now, who else does that sound like?

Bladder Cancer charity

A year ago Alison was featured on our blog, sharing her story of bladder cancer.  It’s that time of year again:  This cancer receives nowhere near the funding of breast, lung or colon cancer, yet affects so many.

The Pesky Vegan logo

Chatting away at a party last Saturday evening, sharing about our site (as is often the case) and I was recommended this gem.

Alistair has been compiling his site for the past few years, since he became vegan and wanted to share what he’d learned.

Glad he did and glad I bumped into Mary Ann on Saturday evening too.

Thank you both.

My first ‘Pesky’ recipe: Aubergine Curry.  Alistair’s site has been added to our recipe section.  So good.

Anyone else spot Dr William Li’s ‘Eat to beat Disease’ book at the top of Julia’s reading pile on last Monday evening’s heartfelt documentary ‘Breast Cancer and me’?  I did.

Julia’s a health-savvy, fit 51 year old that’s on a mission to prevent recurrence.  Dr Li’s not a bad place to start.  Much more on our site.

Facebook feed

This made me smile!  I’d completed a listing for Awakened Pages‘s website and they very kindly added this to their 36k strong Facebook group the next day.

Thank you Jane!

I read Dr Perry and Oprah Winfrey’s book ‘Whatever happened to you?’ last week.  Picked it up for a bargain price on Amazon and shared the details on social media.

Thank you Dr Perry for retweeting to your 32k followers.

Lots of exposure for Double-zero’s work this week – let’s keep sharing what we know.  It matters.

Denise Stevenson founded the health and wellness charity Double-zero.org in 2021 after healing from stage 3 breast cancer at (5-zero) and realising there was no one source to access the wealth of resources that had guided her back to health without the mastectomy her oncologist said was a certainty. Denise is a church founder and president, author and local councillor. She's English-born and has French nationality after living there with her husband and 3 girls for the past 20 years.
