An Idea Whose Time Has Come

‘Nothing else in the world…not all the armies…is so powerful as an idea whose time has come’ wrote Victor Hugo, author of Les Miserables, in the 1800’s.

Robin Daly MBE. Founder and Chairman of Yes to Life

Dawn Waldron wrote earlier this month: ‘It means that an idea has reached a point in history where it’s perfectly suited to be embraced and implemented. It signifies a moment when an idea resonates deeply with the needs, sentiments, and circumstances of a society, making its adoption inevitable.’

The idea she’s speaking of is integrative oncology; the notion that there are many complimentary treatments alongside the Standard of Care to help our bodies heal from cancer. Robin Daly MBE, founder of the UK’s integrative cancer charity Yes to Life, collected his award from Princess Anne, the Princess Royal, at Buckingham Palace last week.

Here’s Robin with his family. The photograph is of his daughter Bryony, his ‘why’.

In Bryony’s words:

Another huge loss: John Robbins, heir to the Baskin Robbins ice-cream company. John forged his own path; co-founding The Food Revolution Network, which we’ve featured on our nutrition resource since day one. He was a pioneer in the movement for healthy, ethical, sustainable food.

Like Bryony, his legacy lives on. A beautiful testimony here.

Here are more change-makers on their way to meet with King Charles last week: Dan Buettner (Blue Zones), Sir Michael Dixon (King Charles’s physician), Dr Dean Ornish (Preventitive Medicine Research Institute), Dr Vivek H Murthy (19th and 21st Surgeon General, US) and Dr Robert Lustig (Professor emeritus of pediatrics endocrinology at the Uni of California US).

Added Dr Murthy’s latest book to our Healthy Mind resource this week.

When it all gets too much it can result in a panic attack. Here’s our Irena with some quick tips on how to alleviate them:

Norfolk, England has been dubbed the “megafarm capital of Europe” with statistics from Compassion in World Farming showing there are now 122 mega-farms in the county and 25,748,309 factory-farmed animals. Full article from The Guardian newspaper attached.

Actress Natalie Portman shares the reality of eating meat.

A worrying AP News article shares that last year’s ban by the US Environmental Protection Agency on asbestos will be re-evaluated. Penn University links mesothelioma directly with asbestos exposure.

Our cancer resource features work from a long-term survivor of mesothelioma. Sticking with the ‘prevention is better than cure’ mantra on this one…

Garden roses. For giving (to a friend for her birthday).

And for drying (for a daughter for her wedding confetti).

Shops are legally not allowed to throw away food in France. Picked up this stash of ripe bananas for 5 euros from our local organic shop.

Now the base for summer smoothies: Take a couple from the freezer and blend with summer fruits and coconut water. Simple.

New head of the Food and Drug Administration in the US shares some great news. General Mils, Heinz/Kraft and others have also followed suit. Let’s get healthy. Also simple.

This one is far from simple, but it’s one of the most powerful half hours I’ve spent watching and listening to a fellow breast cancer patient talk of how she feels about her diagnosis. As a surgeon she also shares what she wishes she’d told other patients.

As both doctor and patient she is well equipped to reflect:

That was from Nutrition Facts 15 years ago!

Here’s the current campaign from Cancer Prevention Action Week. Alcohol does not always cause breast cancer, as smoking does not always cause lung cancer, but the evidence in unequivocal that it does not help!

Here’s Dr O’Riordan once more. She was outside Number 10 Downing Street, London delivering a letter and petition signed by more than 2,500 to the Prime Minister.

Denise Stevenson founded the health and wellness charity Double-zero.org in 2021 after healing from stage 3 breast cancer at (5-zero) and realising there was no one source to access the wealth of resources that had guided her back to health without the mastectomy her oncologist said was a certainty. Denise is a church founder and president, author and local councillor. She's English-born and has French nationality after living there with her husband and 3 girls for the past 20 years.
