5 Minute Lunch
5 December 2022|Health, Nutrition, Recipes, Sustainability
Honestly. 5 minutes.
We’re busy. It’s a busy time of the year. Not too busy to eat well though. It matters.
Toasted bread from a local artisan, bought at yesterday’s Christmas Market in our village. Aubergine paste from the local organic shop. Rocket/arugula from our garden (get us!) Marinated artichokes from a good old jar. Fried organic tomatoes from Aldi.
Done. 5 minutes. A worthwhile investment at a busy time.
Who doesn’t like hot chocolate?
Sometimes it’s not all it seems however…
Nestlé’s Nesquik has some unsavoury ingredients, including carrageenan:
‘🧐It is an additive used to thicken, emulsify, and preserve foods and drinks 👉has no nutritional value. 👉triggers inflammation, gastrointestinal ulcerations, and that it damages your digestive system and put people at risk for inflammatory bowel disease . 👉The FDA still approves this ingredient. 👉In 2016, the National Organic Standards Board voted to remove carrageenan from their approved list. Thus foods made with carrageenan can no longer be labeled “USDA organic.”. 👉The European Union has banned it in infant formula, not the US.’
Dr Maria Temple is a paediatrician whom you’ll find in the Children’s Health section of our site (Family Wellness Tips).
Here’s another popular brand, again with the contents highlighted. We’ll pass on this one too.
This is more like it. No ‘nasties’ in here, going to give this one a go later in the week. Looks delicious.

Thinking of a social media detox in January? Many do. Here’s an interesting take on the medium.
This is how we use it – reaching 2.4K people via our Facebook page last week.
We use Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to share our message, posting most days. Follow us!
We make some great connections too:
One of which shared our work on their social media channels last week. We’re planning on collaborating with Hello Beautiful Cancer UK next year.
We both strongly believe that prevention is better than cure.

Love the idea of a Repair Cafe.
‘Bring something to repair or just come to help others.’
It’s held in a cafe in a local town;
They’re happy to host as folk will buy food/drink. And what a great way to get broken things fixed and meet people. Our planet wins too as we can then re-use goods we already own rather than buying new and adding to the ever-growing piles of unwanted ‘stuff’ appearing all over and being buried under our beautiful planet.
After all, there’s no such thing as throwing anything ‘away’. Where is ‘away’ exactly?
Our Christmas Market haul yesterday, featuring the bread that we had toasted for lunch today, a locally woven basket and a fab natural deodorant THAT WORKS. The deodorant is all natural, mostly organic, from a lady in the village in which we live. Les Bulles Paysannes are a 7-year-old local company going from strength to strength with a beautiful product range.
Confession time: Having lived in France for 20 years I have eaten foie gras quite a lot at this time of year.
No more.
Just need to actually find this new product from Nestlé’s Garden Gourmet company.
On it!
Scanning my adored Chanel No5 on the Yuka app I realised it scored a measly 6/100 for healthiness.
Our skin is our biggest organ. ‘What goes on, goes in’ and we’ve been hunting for a less toxic perfume.
Voila! This was a gift from a visiting friend last week. It smells fab and has great, healthy credentials too: Handmade, paraben free and phthalates free.
Eden perfumes are based in Brighton UK.
Supporting small business. Another reason to buy.
If you’re considering making a donation to a charity in lieu of sending cards this Christmas season, or if your company has offered to match your offering, or any number of other excellent reasons, it would be amazing if you chose US.
We’ve helped many of you this year make healthier choices, helped point you in the direction of trusted resources and shared new books/products/research/websites/films/podcasts/recipes with you.
We’d love to carry on doing so next year; with no ads, no sponsorships, no links, just impartial, solid guidance.
Thank you for helping and encouraging us to do so.
And thank you to the many who have already donated to support our work.
