‘Can food prevent or help heal diseases?’ Mel Robbins asks Dr Dawn Mussallem from the Mayo Clinic. Dr Mussallem replies quoting a 2022 article from JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) stating that food is the leading cause of death in the US. With 60% of the US population’s calories coming from ultra processed foods (John Hopkins 2024) and 67% of children’s calories coming from ultra-processed foods (JAMA 2021) there is clearly a massive problem. This isn’t about perfection she says, but encourages us to be consistent about doing better. More from Mel Robbins on our Healthy Mind resource. More about UPF’s on our Nutrition resource.
Deliciously Ella from our recipe resource agrees.
No perfection required.
UK Fitness coach Joe Wicks created the Killer protein bar ‘to pressure the Government into changing the regulations around ultra-processed foods (UPFs). The bar shows both the potential harms of a UPF-heavy diet, and how the food industry can deliberately mislead consumers through clever marketing.’ Scary stuff.
Back to the good stuff: Raw cruciferous veggies for the win! Just ask Dr Mussallem. Loved this healthy ‘slaw’ from the Feel Good Foodie that we had as ‘a side’ for lunch today.
Keeping it real… There’s been a lot of home-cooking this week (we’re nesting ahead of winter with the daylight saving time change last weekend!) This Fettuccine Alfredo was loved by Denise, but not her hubby. Guess you can’t win all the cruciferous veggie testings….

Autumn Brekkie’s began this week too. Green juice and porridge with chia seeds, soy milk and a selection of berries hit the spot.
The pumpkin’s there for aesthetic reasons only!
We’ve ‘Fall’-en for Aldi’s 100% organic date syrup. All the benefits of dates (explained in this Healthline article) in an easy, squeezy tube. Another autumnal brekkie with oats, chia seeds, blueberries and banana.
More natural options here. Melatonin supplementation can help with quality sleep – and we know how important that is.
Laughter is also great for our health. Here’s a couple of ‘smiles’ on us. The Nikon Comedy Wildlife Awards take place in a few week’s time, here are a couple of our favourites from the finalists.
The Washington Post shared an interesting article about the increasing number of cases of Parkinson’s disease this month and suggested ways to reduce your risk:
- Drink tea of coffee
- Filter your water
- Dry-clean with caution
- Avoid pesticides
This is where we are heading currently:

More cooking!
This lemon drizzle cake became a friend’s birthday cake this week. Delish. (Hubby liked this one).
