Blame it on the Boogie

Sunrise between two trees, over a field of sunflowers

‘Don’t blame it on the sunshine’ The Jacksons sang almost 30 years ago. Quadruple board-certified Dr Roger Seheult agrees. He names sunshine amongst his 8 Pillars of Health: Nutrition, Exercise, Water, Sunlight, Temperance (Moderation), Fresh Air, Rest and Trust. He explains why in the interview below:

Human biologist Gary Brecka concurs:

Talking of the importance of sleep; I popped a blister pack of melatonin in a friend’s handbag after she’d been sharing about her sleep issues last weekend. Seems this natural hormone worked a treat. It’s for sale in pharmacies in France, for not very much, why not in the UK?

Here’s Wikipedia’s thoughts: ‘The hormone melatonin plays a role in the sleep-wake cycle. Natural levels of melatonin in the blood are highest at night. Some research suggests that melatonin supplements might be helpful in treating sleep disorders, such as delayed sleep phase. They also may provide some relief from insomnia and jet lag.’

What on earth is she up to now? You may well wonder. Well…. There are a LOT of houseplants indoors and we keep reading that the potassium in banana peels are super good for them. After the banana-fest a couple of weeks ago and the resulting ‘nice-cream’ we gave it a go and blended these in water. Plants are currently still alive – we’ll let you know… Organic, sustainable plant food for the win.

This one resonated. The ‘Rise Above’ mantra has served our association well these past 5 years. No intention of getting involved in compromising that integrity any time soon (actually ever), but we would certainly appreciate your support as we remain ad/affiliate/sponsor free. Best for us is a monthly subscription. You can cancel whenever you want, but that monthly income is our lifeblood as we continue to pour our hearts and souls into building this free resource for you. Here’s the link, payments are protected by Stripe, who offer us reduced charity commission on all our donations. Thank you to all of you who already support our work, you allow us to do what we do.

So what is in the products we’re being led to believe are olive oil then? Fillers? Seed oils? Who knows. We can vouch for the ‘check it in the fridge’ idea. Actually a really good quality olive oil will often be cloudy without refrigerating. Know your sources. This ‘liquid gold’ is worth paying what you can for it.

Olive oil is one of Anna’s 12 ‘must haves’ in this wonderful book. We have featured Anna on our recipe resource for years now. She’s knowledgeable, innovative and health conscious. This is a bargain.

One of our fave simple summer recipes here; bruschetta. Beef tomatoes from an organic farm in our village, covered in boiling, filtered water to remove their skins. Chopped, seeds removed, then smothered in olive oil and torn fresh basil, sea salt and black pepper. Just the best!

Not tried the trending ‘olive oil over ice-cream’ championed by singer Dua Lipa yet. Having looked at the recipe in this article – nor will we be anytime soon…

Unlike this lady’s recipes, of which we’ve tried many! Maya has (finally) launched a website after years of social media blogging. We’ve added it to our resource, welcome Fit Green Mind. Fantastic food. Her mantra: Plant-based food for everyone.

Ladies, ladies, ladies, this is scary stuff. Need solid research before we make any judgment, but logically if you’re adding products to your face it’s natural drainage system could be compromised. Please do your due diligence before any procedure. Our Women’s Health resource is a good place to start.

Dr Beck joined our Healthy Mind resource last week. We were recommended her Beyond Anxiety book and hopped onto her website where we found this great podcast, whose aim is to: Create a society that’s kinder, more equitable and more ecologically sustainable than the one we see around us right now. Definitely talking our language there.

Fava beans/broad beans. This was a first and definitely not a last. Removed them from their shells, boiled in filtered water for one minute, removed the outer case and these green beauties appeared. They were delicious with tagliatelle, lemon, salt and black pepper. Simple, but so good – and 100g will give you 16% of your daily protein requirement Dr Google says.

Definitely not a ‘first’ for this summer ratatouille. There’s a glut of courgettes, aubergines, tomatoes and peppers in our local shops this time of year, so we washed and chopped them, popped them in the oven for an hour smothered in more of the liquid gold (olive oil) and salt and pepper.

If it’s good enough for Dr Seheult and Mr Brecka, then it’s good enough for us: Blogging in the shade. Please don’t ‘Blame it on the Sunshine’…

Denise Stevenson founded the health and wellness charity Double-zero.org in 2021 after healing from stage 3 breast cancer at (5-zero) and realising there was no one source to access the wealth of resources that had guided her back to health without the mastectomy her oncologist said was a certainty. Denise is a church founder and president, author and local councillor. She's English-born and has French nationality after living there with her husband and 3 girls for the past 20 years.
