‘A shorthand term for women who practice a natural, holistic lifestyle that they incorporate into parenting’ says this article from The Times UK. Diana Atieh has no issue with the term, embracing it on her Instagram page. Confession time: I think I’ve been one for almost 30 years! (and have no intention of stopping). There’s a special section on Children’s Health on our site too.

Let’s cause some chaos with sharing this research into PFAs (forever chemicals) found in smartwatch bands. Brands tested include some of the market leaders: Apple, Apple/Nike, CASETiFY, Fitbit, Google, KingofKings, Modal, Samsung, Tighesen, Vanjua and ’15 of the 22 watch bands contained total F concentrations >1% fluorine, suggesting the widespread use of fluoroelastomers in this product category’. It concludes with the thought that ‘the research demonstrates the need for more comprehensive exposure studies of PFHxA.’ With direct absorption from the band as you sweat during physical activity and indirect absorption via ingestion it’s all worth considering before you buy and wear…

Dr Desmond has a new podcast! We love his work (and his Irish lilt…) ‘Whether you’re curious about healthier eating, the science behind nutrition, or how to live a happier and more fulfilling life’. You’ll find ‘evidence-based insights and real-life stories.’ We’ve added his ‘pod’ to our nutrition resource.

We’ve added this free 36 page booklet to the ‘Where to Begin’ section of our Cancer book resource too. It’s where Melanie U began and it’s where we began too: ‘That first internet search sparked a journey for me that literally changed my life, my overall health, wellbeing and my treatment plan. I spent hours upon hours (and still do) researching, learning, reading, listening. The further I went down this rabbit hole, the more a world of self-help, complementary medicine and owning your own treatment in the fight against cancer opened up to me.’

‘Game-changing’ is how the UK Health Secretary Wes Streeting hailed new weight-loss jabs in a BBC.com article last November. For Nurse McGown and her family and friends they certainly proved to be exactly that. Hers is ‘thought to be the first death officially linked to the drug Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) in the UK’.

Yet a BBC Panorama programme on 14 January shared: ‘The new generation of weight loss drugs is now available on the NHS and Panorama has exclusive access to one of the UK’s top hospitals as it rolls out Wegovy, also known as Ozempic.’

Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) is one of a group of weight-loss drugs known as GLP-1 receptor agonists, which work by making the patient feel fuller for longer. Says the BBC article: ‘between January and May 2024 there were 208 reports about tirzepatide (Mounjaro) on the yellow card scheme, including 31 serious reactions and one suspected death of a man in his sixties.’

Wegovy/Ozempic uses the same appetite suppressant, yet there was no mention of deaths on the Panorama programme…

We’ve been ‘winter warming’ cooking this week and the Red lentil dahl from Bianca Zapatka certainly hit the mark, delicious. Her work’s been added our our bulging recipe resource this week.

Almost 35 years ago this artificial food colouring was banned from use in cosmetics in America due to its potential cancer risk. It took until yesterday for it to be banned in food production. 35 years! One down, many, many more to go…

Vani Hari, who is known as The Food Babe, has been instrumental in the exposure of the harms of this dye, you can find more of her work on our Nutrition resource.

Bought a box of discounted fruit and veg at our local supermarket this week. These lemons were inside. Spotted the small print and did a Google search about the ‘post picking treatments’ that had been added: Imazalil and Pyrimetanil. Wish we hadn’t: The Environmental Working Group have an article showing that the US State of California classify it as ‘a chemical known to cause cancer’. Both are shown as an issue in the following clip:

No more discounted fruit/veg boxes from the supermarket then… The good news? E903 is a natural additive at least. Should we all really have to pay more (organic), for less (additives)?

After those depressing thoughts let’s end on a positive; this is a bargain currently on Kindle UK. We love Brené’s work, she’s such a shining light. We’ve featured her work on our Healthy Mind resource since day one.

Denise Stevenson founded the health and wellness charity Double-zero.org in 2021 after healing from stage 3 breast cancer at (5-zero) and realising there was no one source to access the wealth of resources that had guided her back to health without the mastectomy her oncologist said was a certainty. Denise is a church founder and president, author and local councillor. She's English-born and has French nationality after living there with her husband and 3 girls for the past 20 years.
